City of the future – Second Call

Funding for new technologies which helps to create a greener and more energy-efficient life and work, transport and production in cities as well as to facilitate life and make it more affordable. A total budget of EUR 3 million. Rate of funding of max. 80 %. Amount of funding of max. EUR 2 million. Submission until 29.01.2015.


On the 29th of September 2014 the BMVIT started the second call of its FTI programme “City of the Future” (budget of EUR 3 million), which considers a variety of topics.


Building on the experience of the programme “House of the Future” and the first call “City of the Future”, 5 with energy related topics will be put out for tender in a second step. Additionally 4 R&D services for specific topics will be funded.

In order to support the innovation stages of technology development, the programme “City of the Future” of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) is being handled in cooperation with aws. This makes it possible to also support the market transition next to research and development phases as well as implement investment-related measures and offer a closed support system for innovation.


Programme objectives


Considering the ongoing climate change, the development of a sustainable energy system is a central issue of the Austrian R&D policy. The Austrian energy research pursues the following overall objectives:

  • Increase of R&D quality


Distinction Smart Cities Demo


While the parallel running programme “Smart Cities Demo” focuses on overall urban demonstration and implementation projects, the research and technology programme “City of the Future” focuses on the exploration and development of new technologies, technological (sub-) systems and urban services for the city of the future.


Eligible costs:


  • Staff costs
  • Costs for use of R&D infrastructure
  • Material costs
  • Third-party costs (should not be more than 20 % of the total costs per partner)
  • Travel expenses


Submission deadline:


29.09.2014 - 29.01.2015


Funding rate:


  • Feasibility studies: 50 - 80 %
  • Individual project IF: 45 - 70 %
  • Cooperative R&D project: 35 - 80 %


Amount of funding:


  • Feasibility studies: maximum of EUR 200.000,-
  • Individual project IF: maximum of EUR 2 million
  • Cooperative R&D project: maximum of EUR 2 million
